Useful Information & Tips

How do I find out the correct tyre size for my vehicle?

Tyre sizes can be a little daunting if you don't know what to look for, so this page will guide you through the information you need to know when chosing the right tyre for your vehicle.

The easiest way to find out the correct sizing is to check the tyre that needs to be replaced. It will have a series of numbers and letters on the side which will follow a similar format to the example below.

Tyre Size
195 / 55 R 16 87 V

This can be broken down as follows:

  • 195 - The width of the tyre in mm
  • 55 - The tyre profile or aspect ratio (depth of tyre as a percentage of its width)
  • R - Radial tyre (as standard)
  • 16 - The diameter of the tyre in inches
  • 87 - The load index - This figure denotes the maximum load capacity of a tyre when driven at maximum speed. (If a tyre is carrying more weight than it is designed for, or is running at a lower pressure, this can cause heat build up which can destroy the tyre or at worst cause a blow-out.)
  • V - The speed rating - this indicates the maximum speed for which the tyre is intended.

It is important to carry out regular safety checks on your tyres:

Checking Tyre Tread

Look for ‘tread wear indicator bars’ on your tyres. These are small bumps set into the main grooves which indicate the minimum legal tread. Change your tyres before your tread gets this low. The minimum legal tread is 1.6mm, but any less than about 3mm may be a problem in wet or icy conditions.

Tyre Pressure

Buy a hand-held tyre pressure gauge and check your tyres’ pressure every week when tyres are cold. The correct pressure will be written in your vehicle’s hand book.

Tyre Condition

Check tyres for cracks, worn patches and bulges. If you find any, please consult Mobile Tyres Direct for further expert advice.
